Another Hate Post : Clerics

I hate Clerics. not Clerical spells which are fine , but the entire adventuring combat priest concept.

The overt religion is another thing that wrecks worlds for me and just my opinion, D&D is better off without them as we have them today ,...

  1. I go through phases regarding the cleric. Sometimes I want to use them as-is, implied Judeo-Christianity and everything, sometimes I want to make them into a sort of monastic Jedi-type warriors (spells representing some kind of mystical discipline a la the Force), and sometimes I just want to give their spells to magic-users (or a new sub-type of magic-user) and keep priests entirely secular. Right now I'm leaning towards the latter option for my next D&D outing.

On a somewhat related note, I've been playing the first Dragon Age game on my Xbox recently and it has shown me a "traditional" D&D-ish fantasy world that does not have, or need, spell using clerics.

  2. I pretty much agree with you 100% on the cleric issue.

Of course as a GURPS player and old Tunnels and Trolls hand I am well used to setting w/o clerics too.

  3. Er, I didn't mean to say secular...I meant to say keep their magic secular and leave priesthood as a social function like it is in GURPS.

This is EXACTLY what we did before taking all the spell lists and building 5 color-based wizard classes out of them.

Despite my first PC ever being a cleric, I've never really like the class concept or the whole mytho-religious aspect of the game.

  5. The Jedi idea never really occurred to me

. Other than a brief infatuation at age 8 with all things lightsaber, I never really was into the Jedi.

After the later movies I basically now have amild antipathy to the franchise.

However its actually a pretty good idea ..
