Just a thought experiment ...
Suppose we limit spells to those that have little to no effect on the material world, illusions, buffs, a few physical spells (TK maybe) , healing that converts HP to subdual damage, divination, that sort of thing.
What kind of game does this create?

Some folks would cal that "low magic". But of course if the frequency of the limited range of impacts is actually really high it wouldn't be "low magic".
ReplyDeleteIn the end it may create a game where the players have to spend a little more brain power to defeat opponents and overcome puzzles because of the reduced range of "get of out jail" magic powers.
Thats what I think too. I do think I'd give "mages" or whatever I called the magic users clerical or thief attack scores (depending on system) the ability to cast in armor and a wider range of weapons.
ReplyDeleteGame balance is a nebulous thing but in this case I can clearly see the need for a little combat umph..
